Tunisia has greenlit over 2.3 GW of new renewable energy projects for 2026 as the government pushes to reduce its energy deficit and boost clean power generation.
The High Committee for Private Electricity Generation, chaired by Prime Minister Sara Zaafarani Zenzari, approved tenders for 2 GW of wind capacity and a 350-MW solar project. Wind projects include 600 MW in Tabaga (Kebili), 400 MW in Jebel Abderrahmane (Nabeul), and 200 MW in El Guettar (Gafsa), with additional sites in Zaghouan, Medenine, and Kasserine to follow after wind measurements.
The solar tender targets a 350-MW photovoltaic plant in Bazma (Kebili), designed with battery storage capabilities. Officials also approved a 77.25-MW wind farm in Zaghouan, expected to produce 290 GWh annually, along with two 100-MW solar plants in Tataouine and Gabes.
Earlier this month, Tunisia commissioned its largest renewable project, AMEA Power’s 120-MWp solar plant in Kairouan, and trial operations have begun for two 50-MW solar plants in Mazouna and Tozeur, scheduled to start by the end of 2025.
Prime Minister Zenzari emphasized accelerating renewable projects to reach Tunisia’s goal of 35% electricity from renewables by 2030, strengthen energy security, reduce energy import costs, and leverage the country’s abundant solar and wind resources.
