Seychelles Explores Fish and Marine Value Chains Under AfCFTA

Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), visited the Seychelles Fisheries Authority in Victoria to discuss opportunities for the fisheries and blue economy sectors under the AfCFTA.

The technical talks highlighted fisheries as a strategic export sector for Seychelles and explored ways to expand intra-African trade in fish and seafood products.

Participants examined how developing regional value chains in fish processing and marine products can help Seychelles increase market access across African markets under the AfCFTA framework.

The engagement also underscored the need to strengthen the broader fisheries ecosystem — including logistics, port services, cold-chain infrastructure, and processing industries — to support growth in seafood exports throughout the continent.

Mene emphasized the role of pan-African institutions, including Afreximbank, in providing financing, project support, and investment to unlock the full potential of Africa’s fisheries and blue economy value chains.

This initiative aligns with regional efforts to deepen economic integration, boost intra-African trade, and enhance sustainable development in key export sectors.
