Hasset Dereje, Miss World Africa and first runner-up at the 72nd Miss World Festival, has been appointed Youth Champion and Ambassador for UNFPA Ethiopia.
Announcing the news, Dereje said she was stepping into “something bigger than myself,” describing the role as a responsibility to stand for women, young people, and voices that deserve to be heard, protected, and empowered.
Her new position with the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency will see her support awareness campaigns and community engagement in areas including sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equality, and youth development.
Hasset said the mission is about challenging harmful social norms and showing up where support is needed most across communities.
The appointment comes during a strong year for the Ethiopian titleholder, who earned continental honors at Miss World and has continued to use her platform to make a difference in society.
Beyond the crown, Hasset Dereje has actively engaged in social responsibility initiatives in Ethiopia and across Africa, using her platform to advocate for education, youth empowerment, and women’s rights. Through outreach activities and public engagements, she has consistently emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for young people and supporting underserved communities.
Her appointment as UNFPA Youth Champion marks a significant milestone, positioning her as a bridge between advocacy and action on critical social issues. It also reflects the growing role of African youth leaders in shaping conversations on health, equality, and development at both national and continental levels.
Calling it “only the beginning,” Hasset thanked UNFPA Ethiopia for its trust as she begins the next chapter of her public service work.
