A Kenyan beauty queen has taken home the top prize at the Miss African Essence International 2026 pageant, vowing to champion the African continent on the world stage.
"I am going to be a global voice for the African continent," declared the winner.
The event took place on May 2 at Unity Park in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, drawing contestants from 12 African countries. The Addis Ababa Tourism Commission, in partnership with Mahi Events, organized the pageant as a celebration of African identity and cultural heritage.
Miss Messry Lungatso of Kenya claimed the crown, distinguishing herself from competitors across the continent with her performance and representation.
In an interview with Pulse of Africa following her victory, she spoke of her dedication to promoting African unity and culture, and her resolve to amplify the continent's voice on a global platform.
"I come from Kenya, a country known for its unity and strong sense of African pride," she said. "I stood on this stage with the full support of my community, and that gave me the strength to succeed."
Lungatso also took a moment to address young women across Africa, urging them to pursue their ambitions with determination and to believe in their own potential.
Addis Ababa Tourism Commission Commissioner Hunde Kebede said the pageant underscores the Ethiopian capital's emergence as a leading destination for culture, tourism, and international events.

He reaffirmed the city's dedication to showcasing its heritage and hospitality, while using such platforms to empower youth and strengthen ties across the continent.
Ghana's Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Robert Afriyie, placed the pageant in a broader continental context. He said gatherings of this kind advance the African Union's Agenda 2063 by using platforms such as fashion to promote African culture, art, and pride.
The Ambassador further noted that the pageant supports economic growth and social development, including the African Union's efforts to combat gender-based violence and generate meaningful benefits for communities throughout Africa.
Contestants were not judged on beauty alone. Creativity, cultural pride, and the confidence to represent Africa on a global stage were all part of the competition — making this event as much about purpose as it was about presentation.
From dazzling fashion to powerful cultural performances, the evening showcased the depth and diversity that define African women today.
Organizers say the pageant was designed with a clear mission — to empower African women, amplify their voices, and inspire the next generation to lead while staying rooted in their heritage.
The choice of Addis Ababa — home of the African Union and the diplomatic heart of the continent — was deliberate. It sent a message: Africa does not need an outside stage to celebrate its own greatness.
