Deep in Mauritania’s Sahara Desert lies the Richat Structure, widely known as the “Eye of the Sahara”—a remarkable geological formation with striking concentric rings that can be seen from space.

A Landmark Visible from Space

The Richat Structure is approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) wide and has long served as a prominent visual reference for astronauts and satellite observations because of its distinctive shape.

How Was It Formed?

Once thought to be the remains of a massive meteorite impact, geological research has shown that the Richat Structure is a natural geological dome. It formed through geological uplift and the exposure of different rock layers, followed by millions of years of erosion. The varying resistance of the rocks produced the structure’s characteristic concentric rings.

Is It the Lost City of Atlantis?

Its unusual circular shape has led some researchers and enthusiasts to speculate that the Richat Structure could be connected to Plato’s legendary Atlantis. However, there is no scientific evidence establishing a link between the Richat Structure and Atlantis. Geologists regard it as a naturally formed geological feature.
