Western Union and Cassava Technologies, through its subsidiary Sasai Fintech, have launched a new international money transfer mobile application designed for consumers in South Africa, expanding digital access to global remittance services.

According to Head of Africa at Western Union, Mohamed Touhami el Ouazzani, the partnership allows the company to bring its global payment network closer to consumers. Many South Africans maintain strong cross-border ties and are increasingly seeking flexible and reliable ways to transfer money internationally.

The collaboration combines Western Union’s network across more than 200 countries and territories with Sasai Fintech’s Payments-as-a-Service technology.

Through the app, users can send funds to bank accounts and digital wallets worldwide or arrange cash pick-ups at hundreds of thousands of retail locations abroad, while also funding transfers through bank accounts, debit or credit cards, or Sasai’s retail network.

CEO for Fintech and Digital Platforms at Cassava Technologies, Darlington Mandivenga, said the partnership strengthens financial inclusion by improving remittance services for Africans in the diaspora and their families. Data from the country’s 2023 General Household Survey shows nearly 80 percent of South African households have internet access, while outbound personal remittances exceeded $1 billion in 2024, highlighting growing demand for digital money transfer solutions.
