Ethiopia has reached a major milestone in its national digital transformation journey after surpassing 5 million enrollments in the flagship ‘5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative’, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced.

Launched on July 23, 2024, the program has already recorded 5,005,146 participants enrolled in training areas including programming, data analysis, Android development, and artificial intelligence fundamentals—achieving in less than two years what was originally planned for three.

Prime Minister Abiy described the achievement as a reflection of Ethiopia’s growing digital ambition and the determination of its young population, urging continued participation as the country targets 7 million coders by August 2026.

The coding initiative is a pillar of Ethiopia’s wider Digital Ethiopia Strategy 2025, which aims to build a knowledge-based economy through expanded digital infrastructure, skills development, and public sector modernization.

Over the past several years, Ethiopia has accelerated efforts to digitize public services, including expansion of e-government platforms for licensing, tax, and public administration services, digital ID and authentication systems to improve access to services as well as  growth of mobile banking and fintech services supporting financial inclusion

These reforms are designed to reduce bureaucracy, improve efficiency, and expand access to services across urban and rural areas.

The 5 Million Coders Initiative is one of Africa’s largest digital skills programs, aiming to equip young Ethiopians with globally competitive tech skills. Courses are offered free of charge and lead to internationally recognized certification, making the program a key pathway to employment in the global digital economy.

Education experts say the initiative is helping bridge Ethiopia’s digital skills gap while preparing a new generation of software developers, data specialists, and AI practitioners.

Ethiopia’s digital push is part of a broader national vision to transition into a technology-driven economy. Authorities say the focus on coding, infrastructure expansion, and digital public services will strengthen innovation, attract investment, and create jobs for millions of young people.

As the country celebrates the 5 million milestone, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding digital access and ensuring that Ethiopia’s youth play a central role in shaping the country’s economic future.
