The Simplified Trade Regime, launched to facilitate cross-border trade for small-scale traders, has been a key driver of regional commerce between the two countries.

These traders, who account for around 80% of Africa’s cross-border transactions, play a critical role in supporting livelihoods and local economies along border regions.

The committee clarified implementation timelines, streamlined procedures for border agencies, and agreed on measures to support traders.

The JSC directed the Tanzania National Chambers of Commerce to operationalize the Trade Information Desk Officer (TIDO) by 28th December 2025, while the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) were tasked with completing the Simplified Customs Document by 31st January 2026.

Additional measures include allocating market space for Zambian businesses in Tanzania and investigating challenges facing small-scale traders.

The agreements aim to facilitate trade, strengthen regional integration, and improve the business environment for small-scale traders in both countries.

With a growing emphasis on economic resilience and inclusive trade, the Simplified Trade Regime continues to play a vital role in promoting community livelihoods and boosting economic cooperation between Tanzania and Zambia.
