The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu, has called on countries in the region to enter the new year with renewed hope, unity, and a shared sense of purpose, stressing the importance of collective strength in addressing common challenges.

In his New Year message, Dr. Workneh reflected on a difficult year marked by conflict, climate-related shocks, and mounting economic pressures across the region. He noted that despite these hardships, the resilience of the region’s people and the enduring power of regional solidarity stood out as defining strengths.

Looking ahead, the IGAD chief reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to advancing peace and security, strengthening regional resilience, and promoting inclusive development. He emphasized the importance of amplifying the voices of women and youth, describing them as key drivers in shaping the region’s future.

Dr. Workneh said IGAD will continue working closely with its Member States and development partners to build a region that is more secure, inclusive, and full of hope for all its people.

He concluded by expressing optimism for the year ahead, wishing for peace across the region and dignity for its people, and extended New Year greetings to all.
