Former Ghanaian MP’s Pan-African Road Campaign Calls for Visa-Free Travel Across Africa

Pan-African advocate and former Ghanaian Member of Parliament Ras Mubarak has returned to Accra after a remarkable overland journey spanning 31 African countries, campaigning for visa-free travel and deeper continental unity.

Mubarak’s Trans Africa Tourism and Unity Campaign — which began in August 2025 — aimed to draw attention to the barriers African travelers face due to visa restrictions and to push for free movement across the continent by 2030, aligning with aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

On arrival back in Ghana’s capital, Mubarak described the journey as both challenging and transformative, highlighting the rich cultural diversity he experienced and the administrative hurdles he and his team overcame along the way.

“We started our journey from here with the support of the Government of Ghana,” Mubarak said, stressing that regional cooperation and simplified border policies can unlock tourism, boost intra-African trade, and create opportunities for youth across the continent.

The campaign — traversing more than 40,000 kilometers — also underscored concrete examples of how visa issues continue to impede travel, such as extended visa processing times and border entry challenges in multiple countries.

Support for the broader visa-free Africa movement has been growing. Several nations, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have publicly endorsed the initiative, reinforcing efforts to enhance regional mobility and economic integration.

Proponents argue that easing visa restrictions would not only stimulate tourism and cultural exchange, but also would strengthen economic linkages and empower Africa’s youthful population through increased mobility and job creation.
