In a bid to advancing development of sustainable infrastructure in the Western Africa nation, Tetracore Gas Limited has commissioned Ghana’s first-ever Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) facility at Kpone in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality.
According to official sources, the move marks a major step in the country’s energy transition and industrial development.
The facility was officially launched on Tuesday, by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor (Ph.D), on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Developed at a cost of $15 million, the facility introduces a gas virtual pipeline network designed to supply compressed natural gas to industrial, commercial and transport users, particularly those outside the conventional gas pipeline grid.
It includes a 5.1 million standard cubic feet per day CNG Mother Station and a 10 MMSCFD (Million Standard Cubic Feet Per Day) pressure regulation and metering station, supported by modern compression systems and a short distribution pipeline.
Tetracore has also deployed specialized gas-powered trucks to deliver CNG nationwide, reducing dependence on liquid fuels and promoting cleaner energy use. The company plans to expand the facility’s capacity to 10 MMSCFD within nine months to meet rising demand from industry and transport operators.
At full capacity, the plant is expected to refuel up to 30 trucks daily and cut carbon emissions by about 1,347 tons of CO₂ per day. Jinapor described the project as a milestone for Ghana’s energy security and decarbonization agenda, noting its potential to lower fuel costs, create jobs and strengthen regional energy cooperation in West Africa.
