African Union Announces Programme of Executive Council and Assembly Sessions for This Week

The African Union (AU) will convene its 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council on 11–12 February 2026, followed by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government on 14–15 February 2026.

Opening statements at the Executive Council session will be delivered by Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission; Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia; Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA); and Téte António, Chairperson of the Executive Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Angola.

Following the opening ceremony, the Executive Council will move into a closed session to adopt its agenda and programme of work. Deliberations will focus on key reports, a review of the African Union’s participation in the G20, as well as elections and appointments to various AU organs.

The outcomes of the Executive Council session are expected to guide discussions and decisions at the subsequent Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
