Ethiopian PM Tours, Inspects Projects in Kelem Wollega, Environs

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been on a tour of many areas in Wollega zones in the Oromia Regional State of Ethiopia, where he inspected numerous vital projects that have gone operational recently.

The visit of the prime minister spotlighted development activities that make the Wollega zones to steadily transform into vibrant centers of economic expansion, opportunity, and sustainable development.

His visit beginning early this week – fresh out of intense engagements during 39th AU Summit and hosting Turkish President - highlighted key agricultural transformations and infrastructure progress, boosting local morale and showcasing the success of the "Bounty of the Basket" (Ye Lemat Tirūfat) initiative. The visit fostered confidence in community-led development, particularly in banana clusters, irrigation, and modernized farming techniques, while strengthening local and national economic ties.

Over the course of yesterday, Prime Minister Abiy inspected major development initiatives across Qellem, East and West Wollega Zones in the Oromia Region, underscoring the strong growth and progress underway.

The highlights of his visit include landmark achievement that range from the Banana Cluster Farm and Qeto Irrigation Infrastructure Development Project enhancing agricultural productivity, to the Tulu Kapi Gold Development Project driving mining investment and job creation, alongside the Arjo Didessa Irrigation Project, Arjo Coal Processing Plant, and the Nekemte Corridor Development improving industry, energy, and connectivity.

The visit of the prime minister spotlighted these projects - - development activities that make the Wollega zones to steadily transform into vibrant centers of economic expansion, opportunity, and sustainable development.

The initiative to transform the lives of local farmers through the Rural Corridors Program is advancing nationwide. The Mede Jalela kebele rural corridors development in East Wellega zone, includes modern solar power, biogas systems, livestock pens, bathrooms, and landscaped green spaces, creating a sustainable and dignified living environment for the community.

Nestled on Sorga Lake, the Sorga Eco Lodge is currently under construction across 14 hectares. The project is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed soon. Just 6- km from Nekemte City, the lodge is designed to preserve the local environment while creating jobs for skilled professionals in construction and hospitality. It will support the surrounding community and promote sustainable tourism in the region.

The current corridor development includes wide roads shouldered by pedestrian and bike lanes, underground electricity, telecom, and water systems, plus smart traffic management.

The Arjo Coal Processing Factory plays a vital role in Ethiopia’s industrial development, addressing the domestic demand for coal that would otherwise need to be imported. It supplies essential raw materials to key industries, including cement, iron, and construction, supporting the country’s growth. This project also demonstrates how Ethiopia can advance industrial development by leveraging modern technology while ensuring environmental protection.

The Tulu Kapi Gold Development Project is a prime example of how we can responsibly harness our natural resources for the benefit of the country and its people. Located in the West Wollega Genji Zone, it is being developed through a partnership between the government and private investors. Beyond its economic potential, the project will stimulate other development in the area, including education, roads, healthcare facilities, and modern housing.

Says Prime Minister Abiy: “Seeing the project firsthand, I am confident that with continued effort, it will not only generate economic growth but also uplift the local communities and inspire further development in the region.”
