Mahama Concerned Gulf Escalation Spells Danger to Vulnerable Economies

Ghanian President John Dramani Mahama has said oil dependent economies may shoulder the brunt of continued war between the U.S. and Israel on one side and Iran on the other with fear of expanded scope if other countries were to join on either side.

Mahama voiced his concern during high-level bilateral talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

On the evolving situation in the Middle East, President Mahama conveyed deep concern over escalating hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, as well as counter-attacks affecting Gulf states.

He underscored that the region remains central to global energy supplies and cautioned that sustained instability would have far-reaching economic implications, particularly for African economies vulnerable to fluctuations in crude oil prices.

On Saturday, the US and Israel launched what have been described as extensive strikes inside Iran, targeting missile infrastructure, military sites and senior leaders.

Khamenei, who had led Iran since 1989, was killed when his Tehran compound was razed during the first wave of strikes.

Now with Iran having announced the closing of the Hormuz, a vital maritime strait responsible for 20 percent global transport of energy, fears have grown about the impact on global economic outlook.
