Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Ambassador Konjit SineGiorgis, a pioneering diplomat who served Ethiopia for over 50 years.
In a social media post, PM Abiy highlighted Ambassador Konjit’s lifelong dedication to her country, noting she was Ethiopia’s second female ambassador after Yodit Emeru.
Known for her commitment to law, protocol, and national interests, she paved the way for future generations of female diplomats.
“May her family, colleagues, and all Ethiopians find comfort,” PM Abiy said.
Seasoned Ethiopian diplomat Konjit SineGiorgis passed away at the age of 86, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed.
She joined the foreign service in the 1950s, rising from desk officer to senior leadership over a 53-year career.
Ambassador Konjit served in Ottawa, Cairo, Tel Aviv, and Vienna, and represented Ethiopia at the African Union and UN bodies. She played a key role in the creation of the OAU, its transition to the African Union, and advised on the South Sudan peace process.
Born in Addis Ababa, she studied International Relations at University College London, earned a fellowship at Columbia University, and received an honorary degree from Addis Ababa University.
A trailblazer for women in diplomacy, she reflected upon her retirement: “There is no greater honor than serving one’s country to the fullest.”
