Morocco is set to Expand Healthcare Capacity with 15 New Hospitals

Morocco’s national healthcare reform moved into a new phase as Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch chaired a steering committee meeting in Rabat to review progress on the country’s large-scale overhaul of the health system, with officials reporting advances in hospitals, primary care, territorial health groups, and digital infrastructure.

The country is preparing a major expansion of its healthcare system in 2026, with plans to build 15 new hospitals nationwide and add around 3,000 hospital beds as part of a broader national reform effort.

The initiative, announced as part of the country’s updated health strategy, is aimed at modernizing healthcare infrastructure and advancing the digital transformation of services across the sector. Authorities say the reforms are designed to improve efficiency in service delivery while strengthening the overall capacity of the health system.

The program also seeks to address long-standing regional disparities in access to medical care by improving the distribution of healthcare facilities between urban centers and rural areas. Officials emphasize that expanding physical infrastructure is only one component of a wider effort to make healthcare more equitable and accessible.

Beyond infrastructure expansion, the strategy places strong emphasis on digitalization and system modernization, which policymakers say will help improve patient management, reduce pressure on existing facilities, and enhance the quality of care nationwide.

Analysts note that sustained investment in both infrastructure and digital health systems will be essential for meeting rising demand and ensuring long-term improvements in public health outcomes across Morocco. The initiative, centered in Rabat, reflects broader efforts to strengthen resilience and accessibility within the national healthcare system.

This initiative carries significant symbolic and practical importance for accelerating the implementation of Africa’s Agenda 2063, particularly its aspirations for universal healthcare, inclusive growth, and resilient public services. By prioritizing both infrastructure expansion and digital transformation, Morocco is offering a model of integrated health reform that aligns with the continent’s long-term vision of people-centered development.
