AU Commission Chair Welcomes Election of New Pan-African Parliament Bureau

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed the successful conclusion of the elections of the President and Members of the Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament, held in Midrand.

He extended warm congratulations to Fateh Boutbig on his election as President, as well as to all newly elected Bureau Members representing Africa’s regional diversity.

He also paid tribute to the outgoing President, Fortune Charumbira, commending his dedicated service and his role in strengthening the Pan-African Parliament within the African Union’s governance architecture.

The Chairperson noted that the orderly and transparent conduct of the elections reflects Member States’ commitment to democracy, rule of law, and inclusive representation, as enshrined in the Constitutive Act of the African Union.

He further emphasized that this process underscores the Parliament’s growing importance as a platform for the voice of the African people.

As the institution enters a new phase, he expressed full confidence in the incoming leadership and called on them to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, unity of purpose, and strong commitment to Pan-African ideals.

The chairperson also reaffirmed the Commission’s support for ongoing institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the effectiveness and legislative authority of the Parliament.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission also represented Évariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi and Chairperson of the African Union, in overseeing the electoral process and administering the oath of office to the newly elected Members of Parliament.
