ASMIS Draws 61 Influencers from 30 Nations with 471 Million Reach

The Ethiopian capital is buzzing with creative energy as 61 leading social media influencers from 30 African countries, boasting a combined following of 321 million, have begun arriving for the inaugural African Social Media Influencers Summit (ASMIS 2026). They are joined by 120 prominent Ethiopian content creators, who bring an additional 150 million followers to a gathering aimed at redefining the continent’s digital future in the continent’s diplomatic hub.

The scale of the event was detailed during a briefing for participants and media at the Pulse of Africa (POA) headquarters on Tuesday. Organizers confirmed the summit will feature three high-level panels focused on the future of content creation using AI, branding Africa in a positive narrative, and aligning digital influence with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

A Platform for Continental Unity

The summit represents a historic shift for African media. Gemeda Olana said emphasizing that while such gatherings exist globally, Africa has lacked a dedicated home for its creators.

“Influencers in Africa don’t have a platform where they gather, speak about themselves, speak about Africa, and discuss about the content creations and the challenges they might face," Gemeda stated during the briefing.

"We are bringing these all influencers together in this country, to unite Africa's social media influencers; it's a major one."

Harnessing AI for Quality and Visibility

A core pillar of the summit is the integration of cutting-edge technology into storytelling. Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Pulse of Africa Media Coordinator Bereket Sisay, highlighted that Artificial Intelligence is no longer optional for the modern journalist or creator.

“This technology has become part and parcel of our process as well," Bereket noted regarding AI. "This summit is going to promote the use of artificial intelligence in terms of just increasing or enhancing their visibility at the digital media landscape... enhancing their qualities and the quantity of their contents."

Shifting the Narrative

The partnership between the summit and POA is a strategic move to replace "crisis-driven" reporting with authentic stories of progress. Bereket underscored that the ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between digital influence and the reality of African transformation.

“We are working to change that negative narrative about Africa by disseminating authentic stories to the public," Bereket explained.

"Unless we collaborate one another, we can't beat that grand goal of changing the negative narrative about Africa."

Gemeda added that the arrival of these digital giants serves a dual purpose for the host nation: “When they come to this country, it might significantly promote our country's tourism," he noted.

"This content can bring the big image of Africa to the world, [and] the big image of Ethiopia to the Africans."

As the summit is slated to kick-off at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum on Thursday, the eyes of over 470 million digital followers are now fixed on Addis Ababa, witnessing a new era where Africa finally owns its story.
