Africa CDC Intensifies Ebola Response in DR Congo

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is rapidly scaling up its response to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo through emergency deployments, financial support, and regional coordination efforts.

Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya is currently in Kinshasa, where he is working directly with national authorities, frontline responders, and international partners to strengthen coordination on the ground.

The agency has also deployed eight multidisciplinary experts to Bunia in Ituri Province, including field epidemiologists and specialists in digital health, risk communication, and community engagement.

According to Africa CDC, containing the outbreak requires more than medical intervention, stressing that trust, accurate data, and community involvement are critical to stopping the spread of the disease.

To reinforce emergency operations, Africa CDC has committed an immediate one million US dollar support package aimed at strengthening response systems and deploying rapid response teams across the DRC.

At the request of the Government of Uganda, Africa CDC will also convene a high-level cross-border coordination meeting in Kampala from May 22 to 23, bringing together Uganda, the DRC, and South Sudan to strengthen regional preparedness and response efforts.

Meanwhile, Africa CDC welcomed a $2.5 million contribution from South Africa to support Ebola response operations in both the DRC and Uganda.

The continental health body said containing the outbreak will require speed, coordination, and sustained support for frontline responders and affected communities.

Africa CDC reaffirmed its commitment to standing with the people of the DRC, Uganda, and the wider region until the outbreak is fully brought under control.
