Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh has praised Ethiopian Airlines as a symbol of African excellence and resilience during the airline’s grand 80th anniversary gala dinner in Addis Ababa.

The event brought together senior government officials, ambassadors, ministers, partners, and airline executives to celebrate eight decades of the carrier’s achievements and growth in global aviation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Temesgen said Ethiopian Airlines represents far more than an airline, describing it as a source of pride and ambition for Ethiopians and the African continent.

He noted that throughout its 80-year history, the airline has remained resilient through wars, political transitions, economic challenges, and global uncertainty while continuing to expand its international presence.

He highlighted the airline’s role during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying Ethiopian Airlines demonstrated agility and innovation by rapidly adapting its operations, expanding cargo services, and supporting emergency response efforts while much of global aviation was grounded.

The deputy prime minister also praised the airline’s workforce including pilots, engineers, cabin crew, and support staff for maintaining high standards of professionalism and operational excellence over the decades.

Beyond aviation, Temesgen said Ethiopian Airlines has played a major role in supporting Ethiopia’s economic development through trade, tourism, employment creation, and strengthening the country’s global image.

A special exhibition showcased the airlines’ anniversary showcased the airline’s history and milestone achievements.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed confidence that Ethiopian Airlines will continue expanding its global influence as it moves toward its 100th anniversary.
