The meeting addressed election preparedness, localized election observation mechanisms, and the importance of voter civic education in promoting broader public participation across Ethiopia’s diverse communities.

The engagement comes at a significant moment for Ethiopia as the country approaches its seventh general election amid heightened domestic and international attention. Authorities have repeatedly emphasized the importance of peaceful political competition, while election observers and civic groups continue to advocate for inclusive participation and institutional credibility.

CECOE, one of Ethiopia’s largest election-focused civil society coalitions, take parts in voter awareness campaigns, domestic observation activities, and democratic governance advocacy. Its involvement is considered particularly important in expanding community-level observation and strengthening public confidence in electoral procedures.

IGAD’s consultations form part of a broader regional observation effort aimed at supporting stability and democratic governance among member states.

The regional bloc has increasingly taken a proactive role in election observation and conflict prevention within the Horn of Africa, particularly during politically sensitive transitions.

Political analysts note that civic education and local observation initiatives remain central to improving electoral participation in large and geographically diverse countries such as Ethiopia, where voter mobilization and access to electoral information can vary significantly between regions.

Ethiopian officials have previously indicated that over 50 million of citizens are expected to participate in the upcoming vote, making it one of the largest electoral exercises on the African continent.

The National Election Board of Ethiopia has also highlighted preparations involving voter registration, polling logistics, and coordination with domestic and international observers.

The latest consultation between IGAD and CECOE signals continued regional and civic engagement ahead of the polls, with both sides emphasizing the need for peaceful participation, institutional cooperation, and public trust throughout the electoral process.
