The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has announced that voting in the country’s 7th General Election is ongoing across polling stations nationwide, following a smooth start early this morning at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026.
According to NEBE, polling stations opened on schedule and voters have been steadily casting their ballots throughout the day.
The Board further clarified that voting will continue beyond the official closing time for all citizens who were still in line at 6:00 p.m., ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate.
NEBE emphasized that this measure is intended to safeguard universal suffrage and prevent any voter from being denied their constitutional right due to time constraints at polling stations.
The Board also cited Proclamation No. 1162/2011, Article 49(4), which grants it the legal authority to extend voting hours under special circumstances. This provision ensures flexibility in managing election-day operations, particularly in high-turnout areas or where delays may occur.
Ethiopia’s 7th General Election is being conducted nationwide to elect members of the federal parliament and regional state councils. With more than 54 million registered voters, the election represents one of the largest democratic exercises in the country’s history.
Electoral officials, observers, and security personnel have been deployed across thousands of polling stations to support a peaceful and orderly voting process. Early reports from various locations indicate active voter participation and smooth administration of the election.
NEBE has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a transparent, inclusive, and credible electoral process that reflects the will of the Ethiopian people.
