United Capital Fertiliser Expansion Boosts Zambia’s Agriculture Sector

President Hakainde Hichilema has hailed the US$1.4 billion phase two expansion of the United Capital Fertiliser (UCF) plant in Chilanga, which will double annual urea production from 800,000 to 1.6 million metric tonnes.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Hichilema emphasized the government's support for such investments, noting their role in boosting food security, export capacity, and economic growth.

He commended UCF’s efforts, highlighting the plant’s potential to support Zambia’s target of producing 10 million metric tonnes of maize annually.

The President also praised the establishment of a modern chemistry lab at the industrial park, which will improve product quality through advanced testing.

Chinese Ambassador Han Jing attributed the expansion to Zambia’s favourable investment climate, reaffirming China’s commitment to deeper economic cooperation.

UCF Board Chairperson Chance Kabaghe said the company has so far invested over US$282 million and now supplies fertiliser to several regional countries including Tanzania, Malawi, and Zimbabwe.

Chilanga MP Sipho Hlazo welcomed the investment’s impact on the local economy but called for improved road infrastructure.

Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata reported progress under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP), with over 5,600 farmers already redeeming inputs from a total of 59,188 beneficiaries in the province.
