Ethiopia is advancing one of Africa’s most ambitious aviation infrastructure projects with the construction of the new Bishoftu International Airport, located about 40 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa at an elevation of 1,910 meters above sea level.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister, once completed and operating at full master plan capacity, the airport is expected to handle up to 110 million passengers annually—approximately 4.4 times the capacity of the existing Bole International Airport. The project is poised to significantly expand Ethiopia’s role as a major continental and global aviation gateway.

The Office of the Prime Minister stated that construction is progressing through round-the-clock efforts as the country seeks to strengthen its position among the world’s leading aviation hubs.
“This landmark project is taking shape through round-the-clock efforts, positioning Ethiopia among the world’s leading aviation hubs while strengthening connectivity across Africa and beyond through the continental pride and our national flag carrier, Ethiopian Airlines,” the Office added.

The new airport is expected to support growing passenger demand, enhance regional and international connectivity, and reinforce Ethiopia’s strategic role in linking Africa with major destinations around the world through Ethiopian Airlines. As African air travel continues to expand, Bishoftu International Airport is expected to become a key pillar of the continent’s aviation future.
