AU Renews Commitment to Address Africa’s Growing Refugee Challenges

The African Union reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening refugee protection and advancing durable solutions for millions of displaced people across Africa.

During a meeting at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf received the newly appointed UNHCR High Commissioner Barham Salih, where the two leaders discussed the continent’s evolving humanitarian landscape and the urgent need for stronger support for refugees and displaced populations.

The Chairperson congratulated Salih on his appointment reaffirmed AU's support for strengthening refugee protection and advancing durable solutions across the continent.

They also discussed humanitarian situation in Africa, particularly forced displacement, refugee inclusion, the need to expand durable solutions including, local integration, and self-reliance, while addressing the root causes of displacement.

The High Commissioner commended the strong AU–UNHCR partnership and pledged to further deepen cooperation.

The Chairperson, in turn, acknowledged the progressive refugee policies adopted by many AU Member States and highlighted ongoing efforts to promote protection, inclusion, and durable solutions for refugees displaced populations.

 The meeting comes at a time when Africa continues to host millions of refugees and displaced people affected by conflict, insecurity, climate-related shocks, and economic hardship, highlighting the need for coordinated regional and global action to ensure protection and lasting solutions.
