A French archaeological mission in Libya has uncovered an exceptional collection of ancient structures at the historic city of Apollonia, including a previously unknown theatre overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the rediscovery of a rare Greek racecourse.

The discoveries were announced by the French Archaeological Mission in Libya and Libya’s heritage authorities, with researchers describing the findings as significant additions to the understanding of Apollonia’s role as one of the most important cities of ancient Cyrenaica.

Among the most remarkable discoveries is an ancient Greek hippodrome, or racecourse, which archaeologists say has no known equivalent in the Cyrenaica region or the wider Mediterranean basin, offering new insights into sporting and cultural life in the ancient city.

The mission also identified sacred complexes within Apollonia, which researchers believe could provide further evidence about religious practices and urban development in the ancient coastal settlement. Excavations and analysis are continuing to determine the exact dates and functions of the newly revealed structures.

Apollonia, located on Libya’s eastern Mediterranean coast near modern-day Susah, was one of the major cities of ancient Cyrenaica and has been studied by the French Archaeological Mission in Libya since 1976. Previous research has focused on its baths, fortifications, religious areas and ancient harbor.

The latest discoveries are expected to strengthen Libya’s cultural tourism potential and contribute to the preservation and global recognition of the country’s rich archaeological heritage.
