DRC & China Launch $12B Industrial City to Transform Kinshasa

Africa is rapidly reshaping its cities, leveraging smart technologies and large-scale development projects.

A prime example is the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has signed a $12 billion agreement with the Sino-Congo Special Zone (SCSZ) consortium to develop the China-Congo Industrial City in Kinshasa.

This ambitious project aims to transform the capital into a leading industrial and economic hub in Central Africa.

The Industrial City will host 1,200 factories, create an estimated 150,000 direct and indirect jobs, and stimulate local industries.

As part of a broader $50 billion plan, it seeks to diversify the DRC’s economy, reducing reliance on mineral exports while promoting sustainable industrial growth.

The first phase will cover 75 square kilometers in Maluku, including eight industrial parks, a 2,000-hectare commercial district, and a 500-hectare residential area for workers.

Designed as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), it will offer tax and customs incentives to attract domestic and international investors, particularly in agribusiness, manufacturing, and processing sectors.

The project reflects President Félix Tshisekedi’s vision for long-term economic transformation.

Alongside other African urban initiatives—like Kigali’s Vision City, Ethiopia’s Sheger City, and the Addis Ababa Corridor Development—this project underscores the continent’s commitment to building modern, inclusive, and future-ready urban hubs that drive jobs and sustainable growth.
