The African Union Pre-election Assessment Mission to South Sudan has reported positive indications regarding the country’s preparations for upcoming elections following consultations with government officials in Juba.

The mission, led by former Nigerian Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama, held a consultative meeting with Cabinet Ministers of South Sudan’s Transitional Government of National Unity, led by Minister of Cabinet Affairs Dr. Martin Elia Lomoro.

Following the discussions, Onyeama welcomed the efforts being made by the South Sudanese government and expressed confidence in the prospects for free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

He reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting South Sudan as it prepares for the electoral process, while stressing the importance of continued engagement with government institutions and other stakeholders.

The assessment mission is expected to continue its consultations as it evaluates the country’s level of electoral preparedness and identifies areas where additional support may be required.

The South Sudanese government, meanwhile, reaffirmed its commitment to holding elections and emphasized the importance of the African Union as a partner in supporting the country’s preparations.

The AU assessment comes as South Sudan works to advance its electoral preparations amid ongoing efforts to strengthen political and institutional arrangements ahead of the vote.

The mission’s continued engagement is expected to help identify remaining challenges and support efforts toward elections that are peaceful, inclusive, transparent and credible.
