Gabon Strengthens Cybersecurity After Surge in Intrusion Alerts

Gabon is reinforcing its cybersecurity measures after recording more than 900,000 intrusion alerts over a two-month period, with attacks targeting critical institutions including the Société d’Énergie et d’Eau du Gabon (SEEG) and the Conseil Gabonais des Chargeurs.

The surge in cyber threats has prompted the government to strengthen its digital security framework as the country accelerates the digitalization of public services and strategic institutions. Authorities have adopted operational requirements aimed at securing digital systems and improving national capacity to detect and respond to cyber threats.

The Conseil Gabonais des Chargeurs was also recently targeted in a cyber incident. Cybersecurity monitoring firms reported that the ransomware group Krybit claimed responsibility for an attack against the institution in August, raising concerns about the protection of sensitive information held by public agencies.

The measures come as Gabon advances its digital transformation agenda, including the development of an interoperability platform that would enable public institutions to securely exchange information. The government is also working to modernize administrative systems and strengthen the national digital environment.

Authorities face the challenge of balancing rapid digitalization with stronger protection of critical infrastructure and national data. Gabon has already taken steps to improve cybersecurity in sectors such as civil aviation, where digital systems and sensitive information require robust protection.

The government’s response reflects a broader effort to build a more resilient digital economy, with cybersecurity increasingly seen as essential to maintaining public services, protecting strategic institutions and advancing Gabon’s digital transformation.
