Ethiopia, Uganda Discuss Bilateral Military Cooperation and Regional Security

Ethiopian Ambassador to Uganda Etsegenet Bezabih Yimenu held discussions with General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), at the Special Forces Command Headquarters in Entebbe.

The meeting addressed recent security developments in Ethiopia, bilateral defence cooperation, and broader regional peace and security issues. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of sustained engagement between Ethiopia and Uganda in addressing shared security concerns and promoting regional stability.

The discussions come amid broader efforts by the two countries to strengthen bilateral cooperation across political, economic and security sectors. At the fourth session of the Ethiopia-Uganda Joint Ministerial Commission in April 2025, the two countries agreed to deepen cooperation in defence and security, regional peace and security, counter-terrorism, trade, agriculture, infrastructure, transport and other areas of mutual interest.

Defence and security have long been important components of Ethiopia-Uganda relations. The two countries have maintained military-to-military engagement, including high-level exchanges, training cooperation and discussions on regional security. Both have also contributed to African Union and UN peacekeeping efforts, particularly in Somalia.

In July 2026, General Kainerugaba and Ambassador Yimenu similarly reaffirmed the enduring partnership between the two countries and their commitment to enhancing bilateral and defence cooperation.

Beyond security, Ethiopia and Uganda are also working to expand cooperation in trade, investment and air connectivity, with the two governments planning a mid-term review of their Joint Ministerial Commission to assess progress and identify additional areas for collaboration.

The latest meeting highlights the continued role of bilateral dialogue in strengthening Ethiopia-Uganda relations and advancing cooperation on peace, security, regional integration and development in East Africa.
