Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has officially inaugurated the Megech Irrigation Dam Project, a major infrastructure development expected to expand irrigation, improve water access and create new economic opportunities in Gondar and surrounding communities.
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama participated in the unveiling of the project's wall plaque.
In a social media post announcing the inauguration, Abiy said the project, delayed for years, had moved forward after the government addressed implementation challenges through the Medemer philosophy, which emphasizes synergy and collective effort.
With a storage capacity of 185 million cubic meters, the dam is expected to provide irrigation for more than 17,000 hectares of farmland, directly benefiting tens of thousands of local farmers. The project is also intended to supply clean drinking water to Gondar and nearby towns.
Beyond agriculture and water supply, the reservoir is expected to create opportunities for fisheries, urban agriculture and tourism, potentially generating employment for young people and stimulating the local economy.
“While this success stems from rigorous monitoring, Gondar still deserves much more development. I urge the public to actively participate in its development. We remain dedicated to ensuring Ethiopia’s progress is inclusive, benefiting all regions and citizens,” Premier Abiy noted on social media post.
