Highest Sports Appellate Court “Freezes” CAF’s Ruling Against Senegal

Fresh uncertainty has emerged over the official winner of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Title after reports emerged that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has accepted a complaint from the Senegalese Football Federation and temporarily halted a decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

According to a source, the court has issued a provisional measure suspending the implementation of a ruling made by CAF’s Appeals Committee. If accurate, the move would place the tournament outcome in a state of limbo until a final verdict is delivered.

Despite the growing attention, there has been no official confirmation from the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Neither the acceptance of the appeal nor any directive to freeze CAF’s decision has been formally announced, leaving the situation clouded in speculation.

The dispute stems from CAF’s recent decision to award the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Title to Morocco national team after Senegal national team were stripped of the honor.

The ruling followed Senegal’s withdrawal during the final, a move that led to the match being ruled as a forfeit with a 3-0 result post-match, although the match had been resumed and played its remaining course to a 1-0 win for the Lions of Teranga.

In response, Senegal escalated the matter by lodging a formal appeal with CAS, seeking an overturn of the CAF’s decision, which they dubbed as “unfair and unacceptable”.

The development has intensified tensions between the parties involved, with both sides holding firm positions.

The controversy has also exposed divisions within CAF, as reports point to conflicting accounts surrounding the Appeals Committee’s internal processes.

Allegations that some members were absent from key deliberations leading to the bombshell CAF decision have further fueled debate about the legitimacy of the decision.

With no official communication from CAS, the matter continues to unfold, and the final outcome will depend on the tribunal’s ruling in the days ahead, which experts say will take several weeks or even months.
