Ethiopian PM Abiy Inaugurates Landmark Sports Park Honoring Champions

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has inaugurated Addis Sports Park, a 5.7-hectare multi-purpose facility developed under the capital’s urban corridor initiatives.

Describing it as more than infrastructure, the Prime Minister called the park “a powerful testament to our commitment to public wellness, urban progress, and the true face of the New Ethiopia.”

The facility features world-class sports and recreational amenities, including an Olympic-standard swimming pool, an 800-meter running track, professional courts for football, basketball, and tennis, as well as playgrounds and sand pitches for children.

To celebrate Ethiopia’s sporting legacy, 15 statues of Olympic gold medalists have been installed to inspire future generations.

The park also includes 105 shops for local traders and a plaza accommodating up to 3,000 people, supporting community engagement and economic activity. Additional features include basement parking for 300 vehicles and links to riverside green spaces, reflecting a focus on modern, sustainable urban development.

“True development must be centered on the community,” PM Abiy said. “We don’t just envision a better future—we build it.”

The Addis Sports Park marks a milestone in Ethiopia’s urban renewal, blending sports, community, and sustainability.
