Ethiopia Makes History as Addis Ababa Hosts World Athletics Grand Prix

Sporting history has been made in Ethiopia on Saturday as the capital Addis Ababa hosts a Grand Prix — its first-ever World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze-level international meeting.

Top-brass international athletes from the United States, France, among others, are giving the spectators nail-biting performances.

The event is underway in packed Addis Ababa Stadium, where Ethiopian athletes and international stars are competing at high altitude.

In the Women’s 10,000 meters, Fantaye Adane emerged, showcasing the strength and depth of Ethiopian distance running talent on home soil.

The performance set a strong and energetic tone for the day as Fantaye across the finish line to a rapturous applause.

In the men’s 10,000 meters, Yismaw Dilu came out victorious, while in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Gemechu Godana won Gold.

The main international program begins this afternoon with the opening ceremony at 15:35 local time, followed by live international coverage from 16:00. That session will feature top athletes from Kenya, the United States, France and other nations competing in sprints, hurdles, middle-distance and field events.

 This Grand Prix launches a busy series of major athletics meetings across Africa in the coming days.
